Deusto

So Thursday was the first day we went to the University of Deusto for orientation. Carlos walked us to the metro and thank god it's a basically a straight street both from our house and to the university because that's what I can handle. On our way to the university at our stop we ran to the other side of the metro because there was an earlier train but as we were running down the steps and to the metro it definitely closed right in Carlos' face, at least he didn't get on and we didn't, that would have been disastrous. We were five minutes late and just in time to take the placement exam...which was quite hard, oops hopefully we'll get placed high enough.

We went on a tour of the university, which is like the law quad everywhere. There's a statue of a person that wasn't even the founder of the university but a doorman who was just really friendly to everyone, lived at the university and knew everyone's names and would remember people's voices years after they had graduated. If I understood correctly, I think he was beatified and they just keep the room he lived in unoccupied and just there. Hopefully I'll be able to find my classes.

Then the 5 of us in API (my program) met up with our director Andrea for a tour of the city and lunch. Brittany and I then went home and just relaxed, I took a siesta (definitely could get used to that), and hung around until dinner. At one point during dinner Carlos asked Brittany if she wanted more food in Spanish and she said no, and he just replied in Spanish, oh yes? you want more? Brittany: nooo Carlos: si? si? before we realized he was just joking--Brittany being confused because no is the same in English and Spanish hahaha. Oh wait, I'm in Spain: jajajajajaja.

The next day we had to meet at the university at 9 so we had to get up around 7 which turned out to be like 7:30 to leave the house at 8 and make it in time. Aaand our first class with the schedule we want starts at like 8:30 or something so yay? I was so tired I almost don't remember what we did...oh right, meetings about classes, then activities. I'm going to participate in an intercambio where I get assigned a native spanish speaker and we meet twice a week to talk in Spanish and English, so excited!

Then we went to Plentzia, a town nearby with a beach, yay beach! The tour was kind of not even a tour because it was just a guy who took us around for about 20 minutes telling us things like "this is a building, there is a wall, that's the flag, this is where a nobleman lives" and then we had lunch.

After the lunch--wow I just put "the" in front of lunch, I can't speak correctly in English or Spanish--we went to the beach. Nearly lost my phone but Katelyn found it for me oooops, crisis averted. We went in the water, and the reactions of me Brittany and a fellow Michigander Joe all were salt?!? I forgot there was salt in the sea/oceans, that's what we get for living in Michigan. It was great, the water was sort of cold but the only the I remember in the past was when we went to Lake Michigan in June when the water was literally freezing where all my blood rushed to my vital organs. This wasn't cold, it was the kind of cold that you just got used to and then it was great, you could probably just float there forever. After enjoying the sun and water for a while we headed back to the metro to go home. On our way we saw kids jumping off the bridge and Joe was already coming out of the water from his jump. Brittany and I decided to seize the moment and go for it. The bridge was pretty low and the water was deep and clear of any obstacles. Joe made a comment about us adventurous Michiganders...or something like that. I took a picture of Brittany jumping off but it was just her on the bridge and then just the top of her head after she jumped. She wanted me to take another of her in the air so she went again...aaand I missed, so she went one more time before I got her in the air :P.

Now we've just been hanging out and we're about to eat some pizzas, which we were asked if we wanted an entire pizza or half a pizza. Uhhh, not an entire one. We then watched a Spanish game show which led to conversations of what colors all the teletubbies are.

Going out in Bilbao tonight. Hasta luego!
