Weekend

Friday night our host mom Mar came back from her vacation in Mallorca and Saturday morning she came into our room to say good morning and meet us, I had just gotten up and was sitting in my bed, but Brittany's bed is right by the door and she was so scared when she came in and Mar said "tranquilo" which means stay calm jaja. We were both really tired when she gave us our dos besos (two kisses) on the cheek for when you meet/depart people. It was a gorgeous day and we ate breakfast out on their terrace before catching the metro to Bilbao.
We visited the Guggenheim museum which is literally across the river from Deusto. We met at the giant flowered puppy in front of the Guggenheim, which the locals pronounce "poopy" because that's how they pronounce the word "puppy", but some of them aren't even aware what that pronunciation means jaja. One of the kids in the language program I'm attending was saying how her host mom laughed so hard when she explained it to her. It was an awesome museum, but super modern/contemporary. The third floor was kind of what you're used to modern with just colors that convey deeper things. The second floor was crazy with all kinds of sculptures and interesting art, one piece of artwork basically had every limb as a penis, hmm. The first floor was pretty cool too, I really liked this one exhibit where it had pictures of children and I think children's artwork too but anyways, loved it! There were sculptures outside too, one of a giant spider.

Afterwards we went home and ate lunch on the terrace with the family, which was delicious mmmmm. Brittany and I went to the beach after lunch, which is a 5 minute walk from our house. There's a cute old fashion windmill by it and more modern windmills on the horizon. We stayed for an hour or so before going back home to shower and get ready to go to a concert that the program gave us tickets for.
The concert was really fun, we met other kids in our program as well as met up with other Michigan Wolverines that had Carla (our fabulous Spanish 232 teacher that told us about Deusto). We drank calimocho, which is wine and coke, and a rock band played at this place where there was this wall of album covers as well as signed guitars, so we were guessing all of those people had been there--all big names. There were also two people from New Zealand who were quite drunk and were sporting New Zealand flags as capes. At one point one of them grabbed my arm and twirled me around dancing and later gave me a kiss on the side of my head. Oh man, tengo un noviooo and Brittany pulled him away, oh people. They were pretty entertaining though with their dance skillz<--I use the z when it's so impressive...

We met a few other people that live near us or others in the summer language & culture program at Deusto since the API people hadn't been with them in Madrid. We all went to Sopelana, a nearby town (closer to where we live in Getxo) outside of Bilbao and one of the metro stops. Sopelana is supposed to have the best beach, but last night we went because Sopelana was having a fiesta (Friday and Saturday) because it was the day of their patron saint. Everyone from the city and nearby towns go into Sopelana and celebrate on the streets where there's live music, more music, food, and drinks. The streets were packed and there was a fireworks show going on when we got there. It was definitely one of the best times I've had, I just loved the energy. At one point there was a little bit of rain coming down as we danced in the streets, it was amazing! When we left at 4 AM to go home on the metro (3-4 stops away), a lot of people were still in the streets although not as lively as earlier, but definitely still going. We got home and plopped right into bed.

I woke up around 11 AM the next morning but fell back asleep until around 2 PM where Brittany and I ate lunch and then went to the beach. We were lying on the beach and the next thing I know, I look up and the tide is almost at our feet. There was also a small little crab walking along the shore when this women passed by and just scooped it up into her bag...not sure what you're going to do with that small of a crab.

Anyways, we returned home to shower and Brittany took her siesta before we ate dinner with Mar y Carlos. Mar said one of these days we're going to make dinner together. Afterwards we watched a movie with them called Poseidon but it was dubbed into Spanish, it had that girl who played Christine in Phantom of the Opera. After about 5 minutes we asked for subtitles which are soo helpful! The vocabulary was fairly easy to follow, considering most of the movie was people screaming Oh my God! Help! It was an intense movie. First day of school tomorrow...we'll see if my Spanish was ok enough to get into the classes I need, crossing my fingers! Buenas noches.
